Watch this video to see patterns from Freedom Quilts. What patterns can you use in your Quilt? What patterns look familiar?

  2. I do remember learning about the underground railroad, but it was so long ago. We always learned about history that was MUCH further back in time. It was rare if we made it to the 20th century.
What was the point of the quilts? Were they made during or after the freedom of the slaves? I do see how some of the names of the quilts resemble the patterns. Some, you have to use your imagination.

  3. My grandmother made quilts. I have four different quilts. I would like to study the topic of " How quilt patterns were named."

  4. The quilts were essentially a map telling a runaway slave how to get to a safe house or station on the underground railroad. The quilts told the slaves things to look for landmarks such as a wagon wheel or the direction that flying geese fly in .... sometimes these quilts where hung on clotheslines along the underground railroad as messages directing the slaves along the way.
